WGC had a successful weekend at the National Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Hastings. Lucy Hegan won the junior girls 800m to take out her first national title. She timed her tactics superbly to chase down the lead runner just before the finish line in a fast race that saw her run a personal best time. Lucy then teamed up with big sister Izzy Hegan, Abby Stewart and Lili Szabo to contest the senior girls 4x400m relay. In an exciting finish, these four won the relay to get WGC’s second gold medal for the championships and a second gold for Lucy. Izzy, Abby and Lili also made the finals of their events and placed competitively in their last national secondary schools. Year nine Lola Fowler also made finals, coming 6th in the junior girls 200m sprint and placing well in the junior girls long jump. Other WGC competitors achieved well at this national event which had over 1300 competitors from all around New Zealand.
